I’d been seeing the 2023 film Brooklyn 45 showing up on a lot of “best horror of the year” lists, so when I saw it pop up on Shudder I thought I’d give it a spin. It’s not only set in the 1940s, which intrigued me, but it’s also centered around a séance. Anyone who … More Movies: Brooklyn 45 (2023)
The 1940s served as a bit of a lull in the horror genre, and many of the best examples from the decade were generally classified as thrillers rather than horror movies. Such was the case with the brilliant 1946 film The Spiral Staircase, which was at the time described as a “mystery romance,” but is … More Movies: The Spiral Staircase (1946)
Today’s movie is another listener recommendation, though this time I already had the film on my “to watch eventually” list, as I often saw it popping up on Shudder and thought it sounded interesting. It’s also fortuitous that I chose to review it in December because even though I didn’t know it going in, this … More Movies: Await Further Instructions (2018)
I’m actually kind of embarrassed to admit that I had never even heard of this movie (or the book on which it’s based) until someone recommended it to me a while back, telling me it was right up my alley. Said alley, or rather one of many alleys, concerns Victorian murder mysteries with real historical … More Movies: The Limehouse Golem (2016)
The 2008 Canadian film Pontypool is one I kept seeing pop up on various internet lists of underrated horror movies, and even though the premise always sounded intriguing to me, for some reason I never got around to watching the thing until just recently, when I noticed that Shudder had added it to their lineup. … More Movies: Pontypool (2008)
In the run-up to Halloween of 2023, Amazon released a series of six stand-alone short stories/novellas under the name Creature Feature Collection, by six popular horror authors, including Grady Hendrix, Josh Malerman, Paul Tremblay, Jason Mott, Chandler Baker, and the subject of this review, Joe Hill. All six of the stories are available to read … More Books: The Pram by Joe Hill
While I was casting about for today’s review subject, I suddenly remembered a movie that I watched way back in 2015 that I really dug, but hardly ever heard anyone talking about, either then or now. I originally happened across it back then while I was perusing the “best horror films” of particular years on … More Movies: Yellowbrickroad (2010)
The film we’re discussing today is actually not really a horror film per se, but more like a Coen-Brothers-style crime thriller interwoven with a sweet and understated romantic comedy/drama. The end result is not quite as strange as that sounds, and even though the juxtaposition of the two genres is an audacious one, particularly for … More Movies: Uncle John (2015)
Every once in a while, to get ideas for these reviews, I’ll idly browse through internet lists of underrated and underseen horror films, looking for an older movie I haven’t seen before. And it was during one of these browsing sessions that I stumbled across a 1977 flick that I had not only never seen, … More Movies: Scalpel (aka False Face) (1977)
Whenever I hear about a movie that had a substantial amount of hype building up around it after its debut at a genre film festival, I tend to try to push the film up in my viewing rotation so I can see what all the fuss was about. So after I heard that the film … More Movies: A Wounded Fawn (2022)
