Today’s review sees us covering another novella, as well as another book I was happily able to read for free using my Kindle Unlimited subscription. I’m not going to lie; I definitely chose this one mainly for the cover art, which is incredible and was done by an artist known only as Thom. I’ll admit … More Books: Dirty Heads by Aaron Dries
Daniel J. Volpe was a name I’d heard before, though I didn’t know much about him and had never read any of his prior works. It seems that he’s mostly known for extreme horror and splatterpunk, and while his 2021 novel Left To You is certainly gory and stomach-churning in places, it’s also a heart-wrenching … More Books: Left To You by Daniel J. Volpe
Although I’m usually a big fan of buying and reading print books (as my groaning, overstuffed shelves can attest), I’m also perpetually broke and unable to spend the amount of money I’d like to on them. While I resisted reading ebooks for a long time, for many still-valid reasons (I already look at a screen … More Books: Man, Fuck This House by Brian Asman
Stephen Graham Jones is an author that comes up a great deal in horror circles, but I must admit that I hadn’t read any of his novels (though I’m fairly certain I’ve read some of his short stories in various anthologies at one time or another). Several people had recommended the 2020 novel The Only … More Books: Night of the Mannequins by Stephen Graham Jones
Richard Laymon, who passed away in 2001, was a prolific writer of “splatterpunk” novels, a couple of which were put out by Leisure Books in the 1990s. Along with other contemporary writers like Jack Ketchum and Edward Lee, Laymon laced his stories with extreme violence and gore, as well as graphic sexual content that verged … More Books: Come Out Tonight by Richard Laymon
Thanks once again to my Kindle Unlimited subscription, I happened to randomly come across a fantastic novella by an author I was not previously familiar with, and goddammit, I just love when that happens. Canadian writer Duncan Ralston has penned several novels and novellas, and some short fiction anthologies like Gristle & Bone and Video … More Books: Woom by Duncan Ralston
Stir of Echoes is one of those horror movies I always bring up when someone asks me what I think some of the most underrated horror films of all time are; directed by David Koepp and starring Kevin Bacon, the 1999 movie is based pretty loosely on Richard Matheson’s short novel, which came out in … More Book vs. Movie: Stir of Echoes
Man, have I mentioned how much I love it when I pick a book completely at random on Kindle Unlimited and it ends up being one of the best things I’ve read all year? If I haven’t, then I’m mentioning it now; my little horror heart is heaving with happiness. I happened to choose this … More Books: The Bell Chime by Mona Kabbani
The late Jack Ketchum (whose real name was Dallas Mayr) is an author I’ve always been a big fan of; his work isn’t for everyone, as it’s usually quite graphic, and focuses on the worst aspects of humanity, delving deep into the depravity lurking in the hearts of men. The Girl Next Door, based on … More Books: Red by Jack Ketchum
Nick Cutter, the horror-focused pseudonym of Canadian fiction writer Craig Davidson, made a big splash in the horror community back in 2014 with his excellent (and unbelievably gruesome) novel The Troop, about a small group of Boy Scouts trapped on an island who must contend with not only a sociopath in their midst, but also … More Books: The Deep by Nick Cutter
