I remember seeing a bunch of other book reviewers over the past year or so discussing Camilla Sten’s acclaimed 2021 novel The Lost Village, and although reviews seemed mixed (but tending toward the positive), the premise sounded intriguing, so I finally sat my ass down and read the thing. And I ended up liking it … More Books: The Lost Village by Camilla Sten
At the end of November of 2022, an author named Alan Golbourn contacted me and offered to send me a couple of his novels for review, and of course I accepted, because free books are one of my very favorite things. I regret that it’s taken me this long to get around to reading one … More Books: The 666 Murders by Alan Golbourn
I have to admit it was the title of this one that caught my attention; there was something vaguely ominous and mysterious about it. I will also admit that it took me a while to get through (not entirely because of the way it was written, as I did have the holidays and other work … More Books: Do I Bother You at Night? by Troy Aaron Ratliff
New Hampshire-based author John Durgin is a very new face on the horror scene, having co-founded Livid Comics only two years ago, in 2020, and publishing a Christmas horror comic series called Jol around the same time. According to his bio, he was a huge fan of Stephen King and had long dreamed of becoming … More Books: The Cursed Among Us by John Durgin
This week’s read was another result of what I’ve taken to calling Kindle Unlimited Roulette, where I simply scroll through the recommended horror titles and choose a book at random that has a cool cover or an intriguing title. Patrick Reuman’s A Place So Wicked was published in early spring of 2021, and although going … More Books: A Place So Wicked by Patrick Reuman
I have to admit that as far as horror subgenres go, demonic possession stories aren’t usually my favorite thing, but for some reason, while scrolling through my Kindle recommendations, Nick Roberts’s 2022 novel The Exorcist’s House kind of popped out at me, so I thought I’d give it a whirl. Roberts is a West Virginia-based … More Books: The Exorcist’s House by Nick Roberts
A while back, over on my other channel 13 O’Clock, I did a review of Adam Nevill’s 2015 chunker of a novel, No One Gets Out Alive, which I absolutely loved; it was one of my favorite horror novels in recent memory. Not only were the setting and the characters so vividly drawn that I … More Book vs Movie: No One Gets Out Alive
Elias Witherow’s The Black Farm, published by Thought Catalog in 2017, was recommended to me by a friend, and seemed to have had a bit of buzz surrounding it when it came out, judging by reviews and other people on GoodReads and Reddit recommending it, so I thought I’d give it a shot. As is … More Books: The Black Farm by Elias Witherow
Irish author A.M. Shine has published several short stories in various anthologies, but The Watchers, which came out in October of 2021, is his debut novel, and it’s a creepy, atmospheric, monster-in-the-woods tale based around a variation on Irish folklore. Though the prose tends toward the more florid end (which I actually don’t have a … More Books: The Watchers by A.M. Shine
In my recent mega-post discussing the V/H/S movie franchise, I mentioned that found footage horror wasn’t usually my go-to subgenre, though of course I listed many examples of it that I did actually really enjoy. Interestingly, right around the same time as I was planning the V/H/S video, a friend of mine in New York … More Books: Found: An Anthology of Found Footage Horror Stories by Various Authors
